8 Life-Changing Quotes from The Four Agreements (and How to Apply Them Today)

Don Miguel Ruiz’s The Four Agreements has offered profound wisdom for navigating life with more freedom and less suffering. Its simple yet powerful principles can truly shift your perspective and how you interact with the world. I highly recommend for those new to Self-help, and Personal Development. It’s a timeless book that I revisit and reread when I feel I am forgetting the principles and need a refresher. Here are eight life-changing quotes from the book, along with my personal reflections and practical ways to apply them today.

  • 1. “Whatever life takes away from you, let it go.”
  • 2. “When you surrender and let go of the past, you allow yourself to be fully alive in the moment.”
  • 3. “God is life. God is life in action. The best way to say, ‘I love you, God,’ is to live your life doing your best.”
  • 4. “There is a huge amount of freedom that comes to you when you take nothing personally.”
  • 5. “Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama.”
  • 6. “Whatever happens around you, don’t take it personally… Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves.”
  • 7. “You can have many great ideas in your head, but what makes the difference is the action. Without action upon an idea, there will be no manifestation, no results, and no reward.”
  • 8. “Also, go inside and listen to your body, because your body will never lie to you. Your mind will play tricks, but the way you feel in your heart, in your guts, is the truth.”

1. “Whatever life takes away from you, let it go.”

For me, this quote is a gentle reminder that clinging to what’s gone only weighs us down and prevents us from embracing the present. Often when things are taken or removed from our life, its for our benefit, which can be hard to see when we are attached to those things. It’s about accepting the natural cycles of life and trusting that loss, while painful, can create space for new beginnings.

  • Journal Prompt: What is something I am currently holding onto that no longer serves me?

  • Apply Today: Identify one small thing you’ve been resisting letting go of (a grudge, a past expectation) and consciously decide to release your grip on it.

2. “When you surrender and let go of the past, you allow yourself to be fully alive in the moment.”

The past is a story that we keep actively choosing to replay in our heart and mind. By repeating these stories it keeps us imprisoned and unable to see the possibilities for our life, and the good we actually have right now. By surrendering to what is, we free up energy to experience the richness and beauty of the present moment, which is the only reality we truly have.

  • Journal Prompt: How does dwelling on the past prevent me from fully engaging with today?

  • Apply Today: Practice a mindful activity, like taking a walk or enjoying a meal, focusing solely on your senses and the present experience.

3. “God is life. God is life in action. The best way to say, ‘I love you, God,’ is to live your life doing your best.”

Regardless of your religion or spiritual beliefs, the expression of your love and gratitude for the divine is shown through your everyday actions. It suggests that our purpose isn’t about grand gestures but about showing up fully and authentically in our lives, striving to do our best in every moment as an act of reverence for life itself.

  • Journal Prompt: How can I bring more intention and my best effort into my daily activities?

  • Apply Today: Choose one task you might typically rush through and approach it with focus and care, aiming to do it to the best of your ability.

4. “There is a huge amount of freedom that comes to you when you take nothing personally.”

One of the greatest gifts to give yourself, is not taking what people do personally to you. In the book, he mentions that often we rub against wounds that we cannot see, and that other people’s reactions are because of themselves not because of you. Is it easy to do, sometimes no, because it can feel very personal. If conflict arises, its best to talk to that person directly, and see what’s happening rather than assuming or attacking them. Realizing that others’ actions and opinions are reflections of their own internal worlds, not a judgment of me, has liberated me from unnecessary emotional turmoil.

  • Journal Prompt: Recall a recent situation where you took something personally. What might have been going on for the other person?

  • Apply Today: When faced with someone’s criticism or negativity, consciously remind yourself that it’s likely more about them than about you.

5. “Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama.”

There is power when you give clear and honest communication. This actually ties together to 2 of the four agreements, which are: be impeccable with your word, and don’t make assumptions. By finding the words to express what you want, or to figure out what is happening with someone else, it can clarify and reveal what is the truth for you and another person. It emphasizes the importance of vulnerability and speaking my truth, even when it feels uncomfortable, to foster genuine connection and prevent unnecessary conflict, and assumptions.

  • Journal Prompt: What is something I’ve been hesitant to ask for or express? What are the potential benefits of doing so?

  • Apply Today: Identify one small situation where you can communicate your needs or desires more clearly and directly than you usually would.

6. “Whatever happens around you, don’t take it personally… Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves.”

This reinforces the previous point and offers a broader perspective. It reminds me that everyone is navigating their own journey with their own set of beliefs, experiences, and emotions. Their reactions are a result of their internal landscape. When people think don’t take it personally, it means not taking someone accountable for their actions, you can definitely do that by having communication with them. So its not that you don’t take it personally, if you do, question yourself as to why am I taking it personally, or have a real conversation with them.

  • Journal Prompt: Think of a time you felt responsible for someone else’s feelings. How might their own experiences have contributed to their reaction?

  • Apply Today: Observe an interaction around you without inserting your own interpretation or feeling responsible for the outcome.

7. “You can have many great ideas in your head, but what makes the difference is the action. Without action upon an idea, there will be no manifestation, no results, and no reward.”

So often we have amazing ideas, but we never take action. This quote is a powerful call to move and get into action. It reminds me that dreams and intentions are only the starting point. It’s the consistent effort and taking tangible steps that bring those ideas into reality and create meaningful change.

  • Journal Prompt: What is one idea or goal I have that I haven’t taken action on? What is one small step I can take today?

  • Apply Today: Choose one small, actionable step towards a goal you’ve been putting off and complete it.

8. “Also, go inside and listen to your body, because your body will never lie to you. Your mind will play tricks, but the way you feel in your heart, in your guts, is the truth.”

Our body, and our physical sensations can provide us so much wisdom if we actually stop and listen to them. For me, it’s a reminder to tune into my intuition and trust the signals my body sends, as it often holds a deeper truth than the stories my mind can create. Whatever nudge or feelings I get, I have to trust them because it’s all speaking to me.

  • Journal Prompt: When have I ignored my body’s signals? What was the outcome?

  • Apply Today: Take a few moments to sit quietly and notice any physical sensations you’re experiencing without judgment. What might they be telling you?

By integrating these 8 ideas from the four agreements into daily life you can really elevate and have a bigger world view on others and your relationships with people. It isn’t about perfection, but about progress in how we use the four agreements to tackle real life issues and choose a better way to deal with them. By consciously applying these principles, we can cultivate more self-awareness, compassion, and freedom in our journey. If you haven’t already I highly encourage you to get this book and start reading!

Everything you need to know before visiting the St Everything you need to know before visiting the Starbucks Reserve™ Dream Plaza in Taipei, Taiwan. It’s the largest flagship store in the entire Asia-Pacific region, located inside Dream Plaza in the Xinyi district, right next to the 24-hour bookstore. It’s a beautiful space with artwork that’s colorful and bright, and the rooftop has some of the best views of Taipei 101. 🏙️

They’ve recently made some changes to how you reserve seats and updated the purchase minimums (as of April 2026). I wanted to share a quick guide on how to make the best of your visit so you don’t have to figure it out on your own—like which entrance to use if you’re arriving in the morning!

Some special highlights of this location: it’s one of the few with an actual Teavana bar, a bar for coffee-infused cocktails, and a Siren Lounge. I personally love the Teavana bar—that’s where I usually get my favorite tea latte drinks. All of their food and pastries, whether savory or sweet, are quite good. 🥐☕️
