Try this Simple Traditional Remedy for Period Cramps

I’ll be honest: I didn’t think this would actually work. But after trying it for myself, I’m a believer. If you deal with excruciating period pain—the kind that radiates to your back or leaves you with such bad brain fog you can’t even concentrate, not to mention the fatigue—then you have to try this simple traditional Chinese remedy. It only takes two ingredients: Chinese black sugar and fresh ginger.

What Exactly is “Black Sugar”?

Now, don’t let the name confuse you. In Chinese, it’s called black sugar 黑糖 (hēi táng), but it’s actually just a very dark, unrefined cane sugar.

It’s important to know that this isn’t just regular white sugar with molasses added back in. It is made by slow-cooking sugarcane juice until it crystallizes into a dark, mineral-rich form. Because it is unrefined cane sugar, it keeps all the “good stuff” that usually gets stripped away—like iron and magnesium—which are exactly what your body needs to help relax your muscles.

Pro Tip: You can usually find this at any Asian grocery store. Look for dark bricks or bags labeled as “Black Sugar” or “Unrefined Cane Sugar.”

Why it Works

The unrefined cane sugar acts as a natural muscle relaxant because of its magnesium content, helping to ease those intense uterine contractions. It can also energize you too ( it helps clear up your mind). At the same time, the ginger acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory that increases your blood circulation and warms your body from the inside out. When your blood is flowing better and your core is warm, your muscles can finally relax, which stops those cramps. There also great for digestion and keeping your body warm which is so necessary when its that time of the month.

How I Make It (The “Eyeball” Method)

The best part about this remedy is that you don’t need a scale or a measuring spoon. When I’m in pain, the last thing I want to do is follow a strict recipe. I just eyeball it:

  1. Grab a mug of hot water and add enough black sugar to make it sweet and dark. (Use less if you don’t want it to be too sweet). Stir until dissolved. Trust the feeling of it lol.
  2. Cut 1 to 2 thin slices of fresh ginger and drop them in. (Some people can add more or less depending on your preference)
  3. Let it steep for a few minutes so the ginger really kicks in. And then sip and enjoy!

That’s it. It’s simple, it’s natural, and it actually works to clear the fog and dull the pain during your menstrual phase. You can also drink this anytime you need a warming boost. Try this Chinese black sugar and ginger tea and you’ll finally feel some relief, trust me you won’t regret it!

The Shilin Cixian Temple is a historical site loca The Shilin Cixian Temple is a historical site located within Taipei’s famous Shilin Night Market!

Most people come to Shilin for the street food, but the food is only here because of this temple. Cixian Temple is the literal heart of the market. It’s been here since the 1800s and the stalls actually grew around it over time.

Look closely at the front: The left and right sides of the exterior were built by two different teams of master carvers competing to see who was better. That’s why the carvings on each side don’t perfectly match!

If you can’t tell art history was one of my favorite classes. 🤓
