What is Your Chinese Zodiac? A Guide to Finding Your Sign

The Chinese Zodiac is something I grew up with, and it’s a beautiful way to understand our personalities and connections to the world. It’s probably something you remember seeing on the placemats at Chinese restaurants, reading the personality traits, and compatibilities. It’s a 12-year cycle, but it’s much more than just a list of animals—it’s a system of timing, luck, and character. But before we get into that in other posts, lets find out what your Chinese zodiac sign is.

What is the Chinese Zodiac?

The Chinese Zodiac, known as 生肖 (Shēngxiào), is based on a twelve-year cycle. Each year in that cycle is related to an animal sign. These signs follow a specific order and are believed to influence the personality and destiny of people born in those years. You might think that the order of the animals is random, but its actually not!! There is an ancient story of the Chinese zodiac called the “Great Race” that explains exactly how the order was decided. I shared the full story of the Great Race on youtube. You can watch it here.

Step 1: Find Your Animal Sign

Locate your birth year in the list below to find your animal.

  • Rat 🐀 鼠 (Shǔ) : 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020
  • Ox 🐂 牛 (Niú) : 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021
  • Tiger 🐅 虎 (Hǔ) : 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022
  • Rabbit 🐇 兔 (Tù) : 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023
  • Dragon 🐉 龍 (Lóng) : 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024
  • Snake 🐍 蛇 (Shé) : 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025
  • Horse 🐎 馬 (Mǎ) : 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026
  • Goat 🐐 羊 (Yáng) : 1991, 2003, 2015
  • Monkey 🐒 猴 (Hóu) : 1992, 2004, 2016
  • Rooster 🐓 雞 (Jī) : 1993, 2005, 2017
  • Dog 🐕 狗 (Gǒu) : 1994, 2006, 2018
  • Pig 🐖 豬 (Zhū) : 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019

Step 2: Are you a January or February baby?

This is the most important part! The Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year follows the Lunisolar Calendar, which starts on a different day every year (usually between Jan 21 and Feb 20).

If you were born in January or early February, you might actually be the animal from the previous year. This part gets people really confused because you are only one Chinese Zodiac Sign!

For Example: If you were born on January 15, 1995, you’re actually a Dog, and not a Pig! Because the New Year was on January 31, 1995 which started the year of the pig. It’s simple to find out by searching: “Chinese New Year Date [Your Birth Year].” If your birthday is before that date, look at the animal for the year prior.

Step 3: Find Your Element (五行 – Wǔxíng)

In Chinese philosophy, everything is made of five elements. Your birth year also carries one of these energies. Look at the last digit of your birth year:

0 or 1 – 金 (Jīn) – Metal (Resilient, focused, and strong.)

2 or 3 – 水 (Shuǐ) – Water (Insightful, diplomatic, and creative.)

4 or 5 – 木 (Mù) – Wood (Generous, expansive, and idealistic.)

6 or 7 – 火 (Huǒ) – Fire (Adventurous, dynamic, and passionate.)

8 or 9 – 土 (Tǔ) – Earth (Reliable, patient, and grounded.)

The Shilin Cixian Temple is a historical site loca The Shilin Cixian Temple is a historical site located within Taipei’s famous Shilin Night Market!

Most people come to Shilin for the street food, but the food is only here because of this temple. Cixian Temple is the literal heart of the market. It’s been here since the 1800s and the stalls actually grew around it over time.

Look closely at the front: The left and right sides of the exterior were built by two different teams of master carvers competing to see who was better. That’s why the carvings on each side don’t perfectly match!

If you can’t tell art history was one of my favorite classes. 🤓
