Why Donate Blood and Plasma? 7 Essential Reasons from a Survivor

I never cared about donating blood or plasma until I needed it to survive.

That’s the honest truth. Five years ago, I faced a life-threatening triple threat: a bacterial infection, severe anemia, and a major lupus flare-up. I went through countless blood transfusions and 8 life-saving plasma exchanges (plasmapheresis). My experience made me realize just how critical and immediate the need is—a lesson that has stayed with me ever since.

If you’re wondering, Why Donate Blood and Plasma?—this post shares the 7 essential, life-changing reasons I discovered, straight from a survivor.

7 Life-Saving Reasons to Donate Blood and Plasma Now

  • Sustain the global supply: According to the World Health Organization, 79 countries collect more than 90% of their blood supply from voluntary unpaid donations, this includes 62 countries with 100% (or more than 99%) of their blood supply from voluntary unpaid blood donors.
  • Save multiple lives: 1 donation (470 ml/ 1 pint) can save up to 3-4 lives
  • Meet constant demand: Every 2 seconds someone in the USA needs blood.
  • Cover daily needs: More than 45,000 blood donations are needed everyday.
  • Support cancer patients: 1 million people are diagnosed with cancer for the very first time. Most blood is used for chemotherapy patients. This is usually because many of them become anemic.
  • Support Patients with Chronic Conditions: Blood components like plasma and platelets are essential for treating severe burns, clotting disorders, liver disease, and many autoimmune conditions.
  • Increase the participation rate: 62-65% of Americans are eligible to donate blood, but only 3% actually donate. This explains why there are always so many ongoing blood drives, because there is a never ending need for them.

Where to Donate Blood and Plasma

Red Cross, and Hospitals. Just google blood donation centers, hospitals near me or plasma donation centers. Obviously, use your best judgement to where you donate blood and plasma.

How Frequently Can You Donate Blood?

Blood can be donated every 56 days. So please, donate as often as you can.

The highest demand for donations is usually during the holiday seasons and summer. This is especially difficult during summer times, because depending on where you travel, you may have to wait another 3-6 months to donate.

Am I Eligible? Understanding Blood and Plasma Donation Criteria

  • It depends on where you’re donating but usually it’s between the ages of 18-65. The red cross accepts those ages 17 and over without an upper age limit.
  • Illness – People who have fever, productive cough, or are feeling generally unwell shouldn’t donate. This includes those who are receiving antibiotics for active infections.
  • Medical conditions – the Red Cross has 23 conditions that they consider when screening blood donors. Certain chronic illnesses, such as hepatitis and HIV automatically disqualify someone from donating.
  • Low iron, or hemoglobin levels usually disqualify someone from being able to donate whole bloods or platelets.
  • Certain medications – check with your doctor.

For the most current and specific rules, always check the official American Red Cross Eligibility website, as rules are subject to change. Click here for full blood donor eligibility criteria for the Red Cross.

So here’s the thing,

We never think about things like blood or let alone plasma, until we ourselves experience it and need it, or if someone we love does. That was exactly how I was, I may have donated blood like one time in my life. I’m so grateful for the person or people who gave me their blood and plasma. And I now see how important and life saving it is.

Now, after doing the research and sharing these 7 essential reasons, the lesson is clear: The need for blood and plasma is non-stop. This is because red blood cells can only be stored for up to 42 days, and life-saving platelets last only about five days. This short shelf life means the supply must be continuously replenished. Your participation is the only thing that keeps the reserve ready for the next person facing a major illness, trauma, or chronic condition. If you are eligible, please find your local center today and become part of the vital 3% who give this ultimate gift.

These are my favorite night market staple since childhood. They’re crispy, chewy and airy. And so addictive. This is a classic taiwanese street food you must try!

They also have a variety of topics you can choose from including plum powder. I like mine plain.

Taipei has so many different types of food and restuarants! If you don’t know there are plenty of vegetarian options and even halal ones.

This one was an entirely vegetarian restuarant. I also highly recommend their Buddha bowls. It’s sister stores with popular bagel: Miopane

The best part is if you only have 2 people, you can get half a duck instead of the whole thing! Which most places do not offer.

It’s part of the wowprime group, and the quality of ingredients is always very good. I’ve tried many of their restaurants and they’re all great!

My must orders:
- Peking duck
- Duck lettuce wrap
- golden tofu pot

Everything you need to know before visiting the St Everything you need to know before visiting the Starbucks Reserve™ Dream Plaza in Taipei, Taiwan. It’s the largest flagship store in the entire Asia-Pacific region, located inside Dream Plaza in the Xinyi district, right next to the 24-hour bookstore. It’s a beautiful space with artwork that’s colorful and bright, and the rooftop has some of the best views of Taipei 101. 🏙️

They’ve recently made some changes to how you reserve seats and updated the purchase minimums (as of April 2026). I wanted to share a quick guide on how to make the best of your visit so you don’t have to figure it out on your own—like which entrance to use if you’re arriving in the morning!

Some special highlights of this location: it’s one of the few with an actual Teavana bar, a bar for coffee-infused cocktails, and a Siren Lounge. I personally love the Teavana bar—that’s where I usually get my favorite tea latte drinks. All of their food and pastries, whether savory or sweet, are quite good. 🥐☕️
